HH Krishnadas Swami

Gurudeva appeared in the town of Kapurthala in Punjab on 2nd June 1932. At a very young age Gurudeva left his parent's home and was raised by his maternal grandfather, a devout Vaishnava and a renowned astrologer. Under his personal guidance, Gurudeva memorised the details of the "Ramayana" at the age of eleven, and a few years later memorised the whole Bhagavad Gita.

Right from a young age Gurudeva was raised as a missionary. To this end, his wise grandfather made His Holiness aware of the history of other religions such as Sikhism. This proved very useful when a few years ago Gurudeva preached in Spain and was invited to speak at a Sikh Gurdwara. His Holiness astounded the congregation by quoting the Sikh Scriptures to endorse Krishna conscious principles.

After searching earnestly for a spiritual master, Gurudeva at the tender age of 16, in the year 1949, was initiated into the Vaishnava Sampradaya by His Divine Grace Trilochandevji Maharaj Param Pad.

Parallel to the Vaishnava training, Gurudeva also studied at the Punjab University and after qualification joined the State Civil Service Education Board. Gurudeva served as the Headmaster in a Secondary school, teaching English, Hindi and Social Studies. Apart from Hindi and English, Gurudeva also knows other languages including Sanskrit, Punjabi, Urdu and can read and understand Gujarati and Bengali.

Knowing that Gurudeva was meant to serve a higher purpose, His Holiness's respected Spiritual Master ordered Gurudeva to renounce his Civil Servant duties and embark on a journey to the West in 1966, with the aim to preach Sanatana Dharma. On 3rd April 1966, Gurudeva left Bharat for the UK and started preaching in London. As destiny would have it, one day, some ISKCON devotees visited Gurudeva’s residence to invite him to the temple in Bury Place. The Temple president at Bury Place was most impressed with Gurudeva and kindly requested His Holiness to give regular classes, both in English and in Hindi on Sundays and festival days.

Meeting Srila Prabhupada

During the historical 1973 London RathaYatra, when Srila Prabhupada graced the occasion, Gurudeva had the divine opportunity to take darshan of Srila Prabhupada. A month later Gurudeva and Srila Prabhupada had a personal meeting at Bhaktivedanta Manor.

Srila Prabhupada suggested that Gurudeva renounce his grihasta ashram and take up sannyasa. Although inspired about this proposal, Gurudeva first wanted to take permission from his diksha Guru. Through correspondence, His Holiness's Spiritual Master, in a broad-minded spirit of a true Vaisnava, knowing the benefit of Srila Prabhupada's proposal, gave his kind blessings for Gurudeva to proceed.

Sannyasa and Diksha Guru

As the eldest of seven sons, and a father of three sons, Gurudeva renounced his family attachments when his sons were old enough, to follow Srila Prabhupada's desire to preach Krishna consciousness all over the world.

In July 1987, the G.B.C. appointed His Holiness Krishna Das Maharaj as an initiating Guru. Since then Gurudeva has initiated over 400 disciples all over the world and is an inspiration to thousands of others.

World Preacher

Gurudeva has been constantly travelling and preaching the message of Sanatana Dharma all over the world, including Bharat, Mauritius, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Spain, Portugal, USA, Trinidad, Surinam, Grenada, Venezuela, Guyana, UK etc.

On occasions he has met and preached vegetarianism to world leaders including the renowned Dr. Nelson Mandela. He has also preached in mosques and met leaders of the Muslim community where he has distributed Bhagavad Gitas and enhanced the relationships between different spiritual faiths.
